Getting to Belize: Aviation
Currently I am sitting on our hotel
rooms balcony looking at the crystal blue water and the swaying palm trees. I
say this because the story I am about to tell you might question if we ever got
to Belize. Well everyone can relax… because I will give a spoiler alert, we
made it.
Let’s start off with the day we
were going to fly out. It was December 31 and we needed to arrive at the Corpus
Christi airport at 4 a.m.. We all had our luggage packed (including the two jam
packed suit cases of school supplies) and we all arrived at the airport on
time! When we arrive at the airport we are informed that our flight had been
cancelled. When I heard this news I was
so disappointed that we would not be arriving as early as we thought we
would. Little did I know that it was
only going to get worse. The desk
attendants then informed us that there was not a flight available out of the
Corpus Christi airport that day that would fit our entire group, and that there
wouldn’t be a flight out until after the 1st of January… This news
was devastating. All I could think of was what amazing learning experiences am
I going to miss about this mysterious and exciting culture that we worked so
hard to learn about, there was even mention of the entire trip getting
cancelled. Imagine this news… but I have
to say that the girls in our group handled this situation beyond what was
expected. Everyone remained calm and
started brainstorming ways for us to get to Belize as soon as possible. While this was happening Dr. Seitel was doing
everything possible in order to get us on the earliest flight out of
somewhere. We haggled with the desk
clerk for over an hour and our only option was to split up our group and fly out
January 1. One group would fly out from the McAllen airport and the other group
would fly out of the San Antonio airport. So we did miss out on a day in
Belize, however I was able to bring in the new year with my family and friends,
so overall it did work out.
On January first we flew out of Houston
all together only separated by a couple of hours. When we arrived at the Belize airport the
weather was beautiful and warm. Our bus
arrived and then we started our journey to Placencia. Along the way we drove down Hummingbird
Highway and saw amazing views of mountains, jungle, and river. We were also
able to see locals dancing and playing music right outside of placencia. We arrived to Placencia exhausted and excited
but we ate dinner (which was amazing, I had coconut fish, coconut rice, pineapple
juice, and plantains.) After dinner, we
met at a outdoor areas to meet everyone and talk about our day. We were also
able to see what the locals do for fun.
